Welcome 2022!

Engelmann Hedgehog Cactus

Happy New Year! As we enter 2022, I felt this flower was a great “trumpet” image to herald in the New Year! And in fact, this Hedgehog cactus is sometimes referred to as the “Trumpet” cactus!

Our January flower is fairly common in the Southwest, happily growing in arid, sandy/rocky soil, blooming in April or May. It always astounds me that such gorgeous, delicate, brilliant flowers bloom is such hostile conditions!

George took this wildflower portrait in April on 1984, likely in Joshua Tree.
